Shopping
What Makes Our Pantry Special?

One thing that makes us special is our shopping approach. In 2006, we changed from distributing pre-sacked bags to providing a client-choice method of food distribution. Families choose what they need and there are no limits on food. (We do currently have limits on toiletries.)

The shopping model has become a unique and successful way to help families meet their needs. Research says standardized boxes increase waste. Up to half the food given will not ultimately be consumed. For us, however, in the end it is more about the respect we provide each other through client choice, and the community building that develops through the relationships that are created in the Pantry.
Food
It is our goal to offer a consistent selection of our top 5 requested foods: fresh produce, frozen meat, eggs, milk, and bread. The Pantry also distributes canned and packaged foods. We source our food from individual donations and community collections, HACAP, Table to Table food rescue, and wholesale orders. We seek to provide a variety of food and focus on healthy options.
If you are out of our service area, we will provide a sack of groceries for you and encourage you to visit your local Pantry.
Clothing
A selection of in-season clothes and shoes and for all ages is available to families in our service area at the North Liberty Community Closet, located in the building west of the Pantry. Households are allowed to get five items of clothing per person every month. New socks and underwear are also available.
Thanks to our partnership with Goodwill Industries, families can receive up to two Goodwill vouchers every six months upon request.
